INTRODUCTIONS

Welcome to the first issue of the CKF NEWS. We hope that this publication becomes a good source of information for the member dojo in the Kendo Federation. If you want to help us along, please send your dojo announcements, news, and training reports to the editor. If you think it should be in the News, then send it in so we can put it there.

My name is Kim Taylor, and I'll be your editor for a while. This first issue will be an "asking for information" issue. If we are going to communicate effectively with each other, we need a way to get in touch. Take a look at the form enclosed, and fill it in for the CKF records. After filling in that form, think about tagging one member from your dojo as the CKF NEWS contact writer. They don't have to be a novelist or have perfect grammar (that's what an editor is for), just willing to send me the facts and a bit of background to spice up the story. I'm looking forward to working with you all.

CLUB NEWS

Heard from an old Kendo-friend, Tom Yamashita. We received an up-date on Eddie Yamashita at Budo University in Japan. Ed is doing a whole lot of kendo training in Chiba prefecture. Most days our young kendoka plays 3-4 times a day. His idle time is spent learning to write, read and speak fluid katagana/hiragana, and the remainder of the time he practices kendo no kata. We will all be looking forward to his return to Canada some time this spring and playing kendo with the newest skillful graduate.

-Paul Morgan.

BURLINGTON KENDO CLUB NEWS: Burlington congratulates all the kendo players who took part in the 1998 grading. Hope everyone did well. We salute our new ranking kendoka: Dave Seto -- nidan, Thomas Sawackai -- ikkyu, Butch McLaughlin -- ikkyu.

Burlington Kendo practices Monday evenings 7-9pm. Everyone is welcome to Tansley Woods Community Centre, 1996 Itabashi-way, Burlington Ont.

SEMINAR REPORTS

MONTREAL IAIDO SEMINAR: Goyo Ohmi, Stephen Cruise and Kim Taylor traveled to Montreal for an iaido seminar Feb. 6. Over 20 iaidoka from three dojo in Montreal and one in Ottawa were present. The seminar was conducted in a lovely dojo by a lake. It was originally a horse barn but now features a wonderful wooden floor and great atmosphere. The seminar was split into two groups with beginners and advanced students both practicing the kendo federation forms and the advanced students working on Muso Shinden-ryu under Cruise sensei. Ohmi, Taylor and Dave Green from Ottawa worked with the beginners who all showed great dedication to their practice. The dojo leaders were also put through their paces with some very intense one on one coaching in the afternoon. The day ended with iai demonstrations from all the students and the instructors. After this Dave Green bravely offered to be uchidachi for some of the kendo jo forms. For someone who had never practiced (or even seen) the forms before the demonstration, Dave performed wonderfully and both partners survived without too much injury. We'd like to thank the Shidokan for organizing this year's seminar, as always we enjoyed ourselves and practicing with you was a pleasure.

-Kim Taylor
