AT FIRST LOOK
I'd like to continue with our exploration of ways to increase membership
and participation in the federation. One thing I was going to suggest was
a Junior National championships. The CKF tournament committee is way ahead
of me there, and the Junior Nationals will be held July 3 of the Canadians.
The event is open to all ranks, with a limit of 5 entries per club. It
is open to boys and girls (Canadian citizens) 15 and under as of Dec 31,
1998. This is a good chance to get your younger members involved in the
competitive process. It would be great to get 5 entries from every kendo
dojo in the country.
The framework is in place for a solid junior Kendo program in Canada,
now we can work on that grassroots level and develop the future National
Team members.
In 1990 the CKF began grading students in Iaido. The membership in the
"iaido section" has grown steadily since then and they now comprise a respectable
segment of the federation. From the beginning there has been a good crossover
of students from kendo to iaido, and iaido to kendo. There are now plans
to begin an Iaido tournament system. This is a somewhat controversial move
for many Iaido students but I am confident it will eventually be embraced.
An Iaido competition is, after all, a great excuse to get together and
swing the sword.
Some iaido students are now beginning to study Jodo, the four foot staff,
another of the arts governed by the Kendo Federation. When this art picks
up there should be another wave of new members joining the CKF.
So a member of the CKF can practice Kendo, Iaido or Jodo, grade in Kendo
or Iaido, and compete in Kendo (and soon in Iaido). This gives a nice selection
of ways to participate in the Federation, and should appeal to many types
of student.
This will keep the numbers up for a few years more, but I think we're
running out of new (to Canada) arts so next issue I'd like to discuss publicity
and potential sources of new students.
If you have a thought on our continuing discussion of membership numbers,
why not drop me a line.
-Kim.

HEADS UP!
1. Time and Score keepers for the upcoming National Tournament Steve
Nakatsu and I are organizing time keepers and score keepers (largely made
up of JCC members without bogu) for the upcoming National tournament. We
plan to hold a basic seminar for interested volunteers on a Sunday afternoon
in May. These volunteers would later rehearse/practise what they learn
at the upcoming Ontario prospects for Team Canada round robin matches.
Details to follow. Let me know if there are any interested members in your
respective clubs.
2. Detroit Tournament on May 30 mts_tagawa@ameritech.net
3. Naginata Tour
A Naginata troupe (6 women) will be visiting Toronto on Wed May 12 to
hold a demostration and good will match. Details to follow.
It looks to be a busy few months up until the Canadian Nationals...
Practise hard and Take Care,
Bryan Asa
WEST COAST HAPPENINGS
The lastest in the series of Canadian Team training workouts was held
last week in Steveston Martial Arts Center. Canadian Team Coachs Ray Murao
(Men) and Mark Noda (Ladies) put 9 men and 5 ladies through a tough conditioning
workout. Everyone who wants to try out for the Canadian Team is welcome
to join in these practices in preparation for the upcoming trials and team
selections. David Harding (recently elected president of BCKF) reported
that the workout was a "Ray Special" - lots of fundamentals followed by
lots of things to make you tired.
May 8th is the date for the 1999 BCKF Junior Kendo Taikai. Every year
the BC Kendo Federation sponsors this tournament which tries to stress
friendly competition rather than the traditional dojo-centric nature of
the other major west coast tournaments. In past years there have been mixed
dojo teams and red/white teams. The organizers will have some new surprises
for us again this year too.
For the first time we will welcome kids from the Pacific Northwest Kendo
Federation. There has been a long friendship between our federations but
somehow we have never shared our junior taikai. It is sure to be a welcome
addition to the event.

CANADIAN KENDO TEAM SELECTION EVENTS
-Rick Tizzard, Manager
Three Regional selection round-robin shiai to select men's prospects
for Team Canada have been scheduled -
Eastern Region (Quebec and Maritimes) - May 22 in Montreal
Western Region (BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan) - May 29 in Vancouver
Central Region (Ontario and Manitoba) - June 19 in Toronto
Out of these three Regional shiai will come 12 candidates who will participate
in a National level round-robin shiai in Toronto on July 4. The top 4 finishers
from this shiai will become members of Team Canada Men's Team, joining
the top 2 finishers from the 13th Canadian Kendo Championships and 4 coaches'
/ manager's picks for a total of 10 players.
Prospects in all three Regions are training hard. For those in the Ontario
area, the following practice schedule has been set up leading to the Ontario
shiai on June 19:
May 12 (Wednesday) - Etobicoke Kendo Club @ 6:30 PM (Delegation visiting
from Japan)
May 16 (Sunday) - Etobicoke Kendo Club @ 11:00 AM
May 22 (Saturday) - Waterloo Kendo Club @ 1:00 PM
May 30 (Sunday) - Participation in Detroit Kendo Tournament (Contact
Bryan Asa for more information bryanasa@total.net )
June 5 (Saturday) - Toronto Kendo Club @10:00 AM
June 13 (Sunday) - JCCC @ 11:00 AM
Women's Coach Mark Noda traveled to Ontario on April 18 and participated
in a keiko at the JCCC to familiarize himself with the Ontario ladies prospects.
The top 2 finishers in the ladies' division at the 13th Canadian Kendo
Championships will become members of Team Canada Ladies' Team. The remaining
5 players will be selected by the coaches / manager. Mark is planning to
conduct a special keiko on Sunday, July 4 to practice with all the ladies
prospects. The ladies selection will be completed shortly thereafter.
Good Luck to all the prospects!
