AT FIRST LOOK
This section of the newsletter is in serious danger of becoming a soapbox for your editor. I'd just like to remind everyone that you are welcome to contribute opinion pieces, articles, stories, artwork, news and whatever else you would like to share with your fellow swordsmen and women. Of course if you'd rather not I will just keep on pontificating... and yes that is a threat.
I was going to remind everyone here that I'm not "plugged in" to the
goings on in the federation, being in Guelph and all that, but it struck
me that nobody in the federation is truly "plugged in" to what's happening
all over the country. It may seem like your club or city is isolated but
hey, this is Canada, it's a huge place and face to face contact with the
entire federation is just about impossible, not to mention fantastically
expensive. How about helping everyone keep in touch with everyone else
by contributing to the newsletter. To use the cliche us editors have to
use (under Newsletter Editor/Writer Association rules)
"It's your newsletter".

COUNTDOWN TO THE 11th WKC
After a great gasshuku in Saskatoon, the Team is continuing to train
as individuals and in smaller groups. In the West, the BC based members
arepracticing together every second week at the Steveston dojo. In the
East, the Ontario based members are currently practicing as a group twice
a week - Monday evening at the JCCC practice, and Wednesday at the Etobicoke
Kendo Club practice. Of course all of the Team members are continuing to
practice individually at their respective dojos. Anyone who would like
to come out and join the group practices is very welcome. You can witness
(or perhaps even be a part of) attempted murder by Kakarigeiko.
Three of the team members are currently training in Japan. Makiko Hayashi
and Shigemitsu Kamata are both there for longer term stays, and are training
daily. Hana Ariga will be in Japan for about a month. I'm sure she'll be
training hard, as always.
The Team members have been involved in fund raising activities both in the West and East. In the West, there have been chocolate sales, and I'm told a pub night has been planned. In the East, Yoshida Sensei from the JCCC led the Ontario members in preparing and selling about 250 servings of udon at the JCCC's Aki no Uta Matsuri. The effort raised nearly $800. Many thanks to
Yoshida Sensei and the other volunteers who made it all possible.
Coaches Ray Murao and Mark Noda will be in Ontario for meetings and
training. They plan to practice at the U of T and Toronto Kendo Clubs,
and at the JCCC. Come and see them if you can.

IAIDO SECTION REPORT
The Yoshinkai dojo in Toronto hosted a pre-examination seminar Oct 23
with Ohmi, Mears and Taylor. Challengers from 1kyu to 4dan were put through
their paces for 4 hours with scarcely a break. Practice ended with a mock
grading and critiques from impromptu judging panels.
Planning is moving ahead on the Ontario Iaido championships which is
scheduled for next spring in Toronto.
The iaido seminar season seems to be upon us with events in Oshawa Oct.
13-14, Leemington Nov 6-7, Ottawa Nov 12-13, and Thunder Bay Nov 20-21.
JODO SECTION REPORT
Well OK there really isn't a jodo section, but there are, I would guess,
20-30 CKF members (and potential members with CKF instructors) who are
practicing Kendo Federation Jodo. Clubs offering formal classes include
Rai Un Kai in Thunder Bay, Sei Do Kai in Guelph (with "branches" in Toronto,
Tweed, Peterborough and Leemington). There are also individuals practicing
in some of the Toronto and Montreal clubs.
Just to introduce the art to the rest of the federation, Jodo is one
of the arts that has come under the care of the Kendo Federation in the
last 50 years or so. It is practiced and organized very much like the iaido
section, with a set of "seitei gata" or representative forms that were
developed by a committee of jodo instructors. Unlike iai, the techniques
of seitei jodo were almost all taken from one school, the Shindo Muso-ryu.
There are 12 kihon movements and 12 kata in seitei gata jo. Of the 12 kata,
10 are taken almost directly from Shindo Muso-ryu, and two kata were new
to the set.
All of the kata are practiced against the daito (bokuto) and the techniques
are characterized by an end over end movement of the jo, along with an
intense concentration on controlling the centreline and maai. The techniques
include strikes, sweeps and locks. It should be pointed out that Kendo
federation jodo is much different from the Aikido jodo practice.
A few CKF members have been involved in seitei Jodo for 7 years but
the numbers have increased in the last five or so. Several people have
practiced with Namitome and Ide sensei in Guelph, Kaminoda sensei in the
USA, and Ishido sensei in England. Regular visits from high ranking Japanese
sensei have increased the overall skill level dramatically and these will
continue.
