CKF Senior Leaders Fund
Posted May 11, 2012
Dear members,
As you may know, the CKF recently announced the establishment of development committees for Kendo, Iaido and Jodo. The Board of Directors has committed to the funding of these committees to a total of $12,500 per year for all three Arts.
The committees are comprised of our younger CKF generation. I am expecting that this funding initiative will encourage a grass roots development of the Arts throughout the country.
In addition the Board of Directors have also set up a CKF Senior Leaders’ Fund which will provide senior leaders exposure to international level of training. Our commitment for this new initiative is $5,000 for this year. As I am sure your are aware, our senior leaders have, in addition to their personal commitment of time and effort, also have in the past made personal financial investments.

The Board of Directors appreciates and supports this ongoing dedication to CKF. We strongly believe that the advancement and improvement of our leaders’ knowledge and skills will benefit all our members. And to this end, these two funding initiatives will be managed by our young and senior generations to promote the future of CKF
These funding initiates are made possible by the recent increases in grading fees.
Sincerely,
Hiro Okusa, President

Chers membres,
Bien cordialement,
Hiro Okusa, Président

Message from the President and Treasurer on Fee Increases
Posted March 11, 2012
Dear CKF Members,
The CKF Board of Directors has recently announced our new fee structure for grading, registration, and the issuance of dan certificates. These fees have not seen a substantial increase in the past decade.
Some may think that these increases are quite large. However one must not view the percentage increases solely compared with last year; that is, the actual annual rate of increase over time is quite nominal, since increases have not been implemented for many years.
Moreover, we would like members to appreciate that these increases are needed to cover costs for many areas of our on-going operations that have risen appreciably. We have new costs in areas such as legal fees, PayPal, information technology, and Webpage administration, in addition to higher expenses related to grading itself.
Furthermore, we have implemented new development programs for all three arts, kendo, iaido and jodo. We are also starting an important outreach program to areas in Canada that are just beginning to organize, such as the Atlantic provinces, which is showing much promise. All these initiatives require additional resources.
Please note as well that we have made separate categories for junior CKF members. As an incentive for younger members to grade, there is no increase for juniors at 1st-kyu level and a very nominal increase for the 1st-dan level.
After you consider the above factors, we hope you will kindly understand, appreciate, and accept our rationale for increasing CKF fees at this time.
Thank you very much.

New Years Greeting from the CKF President
Posted January 1, 2012
Happy new years to you all!
Bonne année à tous!
In 2011, we celebrated the 100 year anniversary of kendo in Canada. As you know, the history of kendo in our country is rich, filled with tradition but also with continuous developments. All CKF promoted disciplines have been very active in recent years characterized by exciting ongoing events and key milestones.
On February 11th, the 50th Steveston Kendo Tournament will take place. I would like to extend my gratitude to those who have organized and supported this special event over generations.
In addition, the 15th World Kendo Championship will be held in Novara, Italy from May 24th. The WKC will have participants from over 53 countries, an amazing testament of how kendo has spread throughout the world. Team Canada has been training hard since last spring: the women's team trained at a gasshuku for nine days in Japan whilst the men's final selection will be announced very soon. We wish the best of luck to all participants. In support, the Team Canada management group has launched a successful fundraiser and as a result, the CKF has received funding from both National Bank and Hitachi Canada Ltd. The group is also gratefully accepting donations from individual CKF members.
Going forward, I continue to encourage region wide promotion of all kendo activities in British Columbia, the Prairies, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.
As for Iaido/Jodo, over 70 applicants applied in the 2011 winter grading which took place in Toronto. I am pleased to see the increasing popularity of these disciplines in the east and look forward to further growth in the west.
I would like to thank you all for your continued support and dedication to CKF.
Best wishes to you and your families in 2012.
