The Board of Directors held a meeting in Toronto on June 9th where several decisions were made that CKF members should be aware of.
Tadashi Wakabayashi resigned from his positions as Director and CKF Secretary. The board accepted his resignation and thanked him for his service to CKF.
Neil Gendzwill was nominated and approved as the new CKF Secretary. He will also continue in his function as Grading Secretary, responsible for overseeing the organization and recording of gradings.
Eduardo Cigliutti was nominated and approved as interim Director. His position will be up for vote at the next Annual General Meeting. Additionally, Mr. Cigliutti accepted the position of Membership Secretary, responsible for maintaining the membership list.
The Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act is changing. The CKF has until 2014 to comply with the revised act by submitting articles of continuance and filing new by-laws. The board has been at work on this project for many months. Ryan Prendergast, member of York University Kendo Club and a lawyer who specializes in this kind of law, assisted us in drawing up the documents in accordance with the upcoming changes to the law. The board thanked Prof. Wakabayashi and Mr. Prendergast for all their hard work in preparing the articles of continuance and new by-law.
The board approved draft versions of the articles of continuance and new by-law. However, these documents must also be approved by the membership. There will be a special meeting for this purpose held later this year, as our normal practice of discussing such things at national championships will not allow sufficient time to meet the 2014 deadline. Notice of the meeting together with the the draft documents will be distributed at a later date.
The board also discussed the problems related to the collection of fees for both individuals and clubs. Various solutions to the problem were discussed but no resolution was made. The board wishes to remind the membership that fees are due every year regardless of whether people grade or not, and that the CKF as an organization relies on its membership fees to operate.
Hiro Okusa reported some highlights of the IKF Directors’ meeting held in Novara. He gave some statistics for numbers of practitioners: Japan had 1.6 million; Korea, 0.6 million; France, 8000; the US and Chinese Taipei, 5000 each; and Germany, 4000. Hence Canada lags behind in numbers.
He related that he had visited the Maritime Provinces in January and was well treated by eager practitioners who asked for their own grading rather than have to go to Quebec or Ontario. The Development Fund Committee is currently looking into this proposal.
Sincerely,
Neil Gendzwill, CKF Secretary
for Hiro Okusa, CKF President
